The most common re-roof on the Alabama Gulf Coast, and the right default for most homes here — provided the wind rating and the nailing are right.
Architectural shingles — also called dimensional or laminate shingles — are built from multiple layers bonded together rather than a single flat sheet with cut-outs. That gives them more weight, a thicker profile and a noticeably better wind rating than the old three-tab product.
On this coast the weight and the lamination matter more than the look. A heavier shingle with a wider seal strip resists uplift better, and there are no tab cut-outs for wind to catch. Three-tab shingles are effectively obsolete in Baldwin County for that reason.
They are also what most of the Gulf Shores housing stock already carries, which means replacement is straightforward and matching a neighbourhood or HOA aesthetic is rarely a problem.
Here is where architectural shingle quotes diverge. Every roof we install in Baldwin County is:
A "30-year architectural shingle" on a quote tells you almost nothing on its own. The wind rating and the nailing pattern tell you everything. If a competing bid does not state both, ask — and if the answer is four nails, you are comparing a code-compliant roof against one that is not.
Worth knowing: that manufacturer warranty length assumes installation to their high-wind spec. Install the same shingle with four nails and the warranty is generally void anyway — so the cheaper bid is not buying you the warranty it appears to.
This is where we differ from the brochure. A shingle sold as a 30-year product in a temperate climate is realistically doing well to deliver 15 to 20 years in Gulf Shores. It is not a defect — it is UV, heat, humidity, salt and hurricane-season wind acting on the same roof at once.
Ventilation makes a measurable difference. An under-ventilated attic bakes the underside of the shingles and can take years off the roof, which is why we check ventilation on every estimate rather than just counting squares.
If you want materially longer service life, the conversation is metal or stone-coated steel. If you want the best value per year on a typical Gulf Shores home, architectural shingles installed properly are hard to beat.
You can absolutely build a FORTIFIED roof with architectural shingles — most FORTIFIED roofs on this coast are exactly that. The standard is about the assembly rather than the covering: a sealed deck, ring-shank nails at tighter spacing, enhanced edge metal and wind-driven-rain-resistant vents, on top of a high-wind-rated shingle.
If you are replacing with architectural shingles anyway, it is worth asking whether to do it to the FORTIFIED standard and claim up to $10,000 of grant money plus a wind-premium discount of up to 35%. Details here.
The most reliable wear indicator on an asphalt roof. Heavy loss across the whole roof means the clock is short.
The shingle has lost flexibility and will not re-seal. Across several slopes, that is a replacement.
Exposed asphalt mat. UV degrades it fast once the granules are gone.
The seal strip has failed. Very common after wind and easy to miss from the ground.
If your roof still has them, it predates the current wind standard and is worth assessing.
Several patches usually means the roof has been failing progressively rather than at one point.
Any roofer can install an architectural shingle. Installing one that survives a Category 2 is about the nailing pattern, the starter course, the edge metal and drying the deck in the same day — details that are invisible on a finished roof and decisive in a storm.
